So why isn’t Throbbing Gristle considered one of the great ‘shock rock’ acts?
Question by : So why isn’t Throbbing Gristle considered one of the great ‘shock rock’ acts?
Is is because they’re industrial, and it just comes with the job?
But I mean, no way in Hell will you ever hear stories about Cabaret Voltaire giving themselves onstage enemas with blood and urine, or injecting blood into one of their own member’s vaginas, watching it trickle out, collecting it, injecting it into raw eggs, eating the eggs, then vomiting it all back up immediately afterwards. Or Skinny Puppy shoving giant nails down their throats just to see what might happen.
I mean, imagine what it must’ve looked like in their touring bus. Probably covered in vomit, shit, semen, and other forms of procreative fluids, just developing all sorts of fungi and swarming with unidentifiable organisms.
And they call Alice Cooper crazy.
What is this?
Or maybe they -are- considered one of the greats…next time this topic comes up with somebody and Alice Cooper gets mentioned, kickin’ as he is, I won’t be able to resist the urge to bring TG up. Teeheheheh….
‘Because nobody cares about drony industrial sh^t.’
> implying you think drony industrial music is shit
I doubt anybody got killed at any TG shows (although it’s a possibility), and from what I’ve heard about the early Swans performances, it doesn’t sound like stuff that could fucking KILL people. Maybe make them go deaf or give them vertigo or something, but not make their body stop operating, FFS.
TG was trying to shock people, Swans, I think, had some type of agenda. They both probably had agendas, actually, but Swans’ was more about being difficult than TG, which was more about being gross and…generally unspeakable. I don’t know too much about the Butthole Surfers, but I think they might fall somewhere between those two ends of the spectrum.

Damn. I had no clue they did that kind of stuff. No clue why they aren’t considered that.
Because nobody cares about drony industrial sh^t. You can ask the same thing about the Butthole Surfers… and I think there’s a different between “shock value” and “holy sh^t im gonna dip out of here before i get killed”.

maybe they’re not as “shock” as Throbbing Gristle or Alice, but they still put on pretty f^cked up shows, or the band Cows, can apply in this as well. Alice Cooper ain’t sh^t compared to any of them. Have you seen anything from Swans when they were in their early years live? cops would have to come in and stop the show several times because people were supposedly killed.
**i cant find any videos for Swan’s Public Castration Is A Good Idea. Its probably best that I shouldnt
***no. i wasnt implying that Throbbing Gristle was sh^t, I love them and you know that. I was just saying in the point of view of other people. because ya’know.. people would totally say the same thing if they listen to their first and third annual reports.
I think there’s probably a line between “that’s odd and I don’t like it and I might protest but I’m not REALLY shocked/afraid” (Alice Cooper and the like fall behind this one) and “Oh, this is truly insane” (Throbbing Gristle and the like fall here).
Like, I’m sure the vast majority of people know Alice is all just harmless, and even if they don’t, what’re they gonna say? *fake* suicide and makeup? Not really bad at all. But stuff Throbbing Gristle (or..GG Allin) pulled…D:.
oh, and there also might not be a POINT for some of the groups who report on the sh*t Alice or Marilyn Manson or whoever they’re outraged at to report on genuinely shocking stuff. I mean, they need sensationalism, yeah, but also a reason that it’s gonna be so bad. Alice/Marilyn’s lower level of shock sells more albums, so..that’s what gets famous. They probably figure Throbbing Gristle fans aren’t gonna really give a f*ck what they have to say, anyway.
well, look at your details…hardly anything about the music but mostly about the attention getting onstage antics that in the final analysis means nothing when discussing the actual music they may have made.
there is a reason nobody cares about drony industrial “music”.
